Lapland Lake Instructors

Alec Davis retired after seven years as president of the Bank of Skaneateles.  Before cross country skiing, Alec competed in snowshoe races.  He started skiing at Lapland Lake during the 1989-1990 winter season and has been an instructor since the 1998-1999 winter season.  He enjoys teaching to maintain his own technique and share his passion for the sport.  Alec’s favorite trail at Lapland Lake is Karhu Polku.  Alec is also a nationally ranked canoeist.

Coleen Stevens has been an instructor at Lapland Lake since the 2006-2007 winter season.  She currently coaches the Scotia Glenville High School nordic team.  In the off-season she enjoys competing in running races and spending time with her three sons and husband.  She hopes to compete in nordic ski races in the future.

Donald Mowbray started skiing as a child in northern Minnesota.  He is now retired from General Electric where he worked as a mechanical engineer.  He has been active in the New York State Cross Country racing program from 1970-1997.  Don skied on Lapland Lake’s trails the first day of the resort’s operation and has been an instructor since 1998.

John Stahl has been an instructor at Lapland Lake since the 2005-2006 winter season.  A former professional dance instructor, John began back country skiing in Utah in the mid 70’s while attending the University of Utah.  John is the father of two girls.

Meg Amell has been coming to Lapland Lake since 1985.  She has been skiing her entire life and found a new joy teaching children in Lapland Lake’s Kids’ Clubs.  In the off-season Meg enjoys running, biking and hiking in the Adirondacks.  Her favorite trail at Lapland Lake is Leilan Latu because she enjoys having the wind hit her face.

Rich Stone has been an instructor at Lapland Lake since the 1996-1997 winter season.  Olavi helped Rich find his passion of skiing, and Rich then became a PSIA level one instructor.  Rich lives in Rosendale in the Hudson Valley and works in Poughkeepsie.  He has been especially effective in dealing with Lapland Lake’s famous red squirrels.

Richard Dixon started skiing in the 1986-1987 winter season.  He retired from the banking and financial industry and now enjoys his time skiing at Lapland Lake.  Richard has been an instructor since the 1997-1998 winter season and enjoys teaching people new things.  As a world-class skier, Richard has skied and competed in Sweden, Norway and Italy.  When the snow isn’t on the ground, Richard likes to run, bike, hike and roller ski.

Roy Keats is retired from General Electric and Lockheed Martin.  He started skiing in the backcountry and at ski areas and became involved in cross country ski racing when his children started in High School.  Roy searches for the first signs of snow with his wife Sue.  Roy began instructing at Lapland Lake during the 2007-08 season and enjoys passing on his knowledge and love of skiing to others.

Sherry Dixon began skiing as a way to stay in shape for running.  Racing became her passion in 1987 with Empire State Games.  Since then she has competed internationally with her most recent trip to Sweden.  She currently holds 8 national medals and hopes to win many more.  Teaching lessons allows Sherry to share her love of cross country skiing.  It has enriched her life and her well-being.  She has been an instructor at Lapland Lake since the 2002-2003 winter season and is a retired teacher.

Susan Henrikkson has skied at Lapland Lake since the 1994-1995 winter season.  Her then boyfriend (now husband) Roger, who is from Sweden, encouraged her to ski…but it was men in tights that really captured her attention!  Now, she is a “monster” skier.  She loves the cold weather and getting out and playing in the snow.  Susan is a people person and loves to teach others something they want to learn.  Susan has been instructing since the 2001-2002 winter season.  For classic skiing Susan’s favorite trail is Sisu and for skate technique her favorite trail is Era-Polku.

Kurtis Nordahl’s skiing experience started at Lapland Lake during the 1998-1999 winter season.  His passion for skiing started with competition in high school.  As a graduate of SUNY New Paltz he has continued his passion of skiing by being an instructor at Lapland Lake.  He loves to teach people something completely new and something they are excited to learn.  In the off season Kurtis enjoys running marathons and cycling.  Kurtis’s favorite trail at Lapland Lake is Tunturi.
